Today I wanted to talk about one of the most surprising books I’ve read recently—The Other Mrs Miller by Allison Dickson. This book completely blew me away… I felt almost every emotion there is to feel and it kept my interest the entire time.
This is the type of book you want to go into knowing absolutely nothing. I’ve already half spoiled it for you by telling you how mind-blowing it is.
The premise itself is vague and reveals very little about what actually happens. Phoebe Miller is a bored housewife who notices a car parked outside her house and starts to suspect she is being spied on. When a family moves in across the street, Phoebe decides to befriend the mother, Vicki, and as the story progresses, we start to wonder what the heck is going to happen next.
The turns this story takes are so unexpected and so wild, it’s virtually impossible to predict. However, I do not mind suspending my belief for this book. Too often, I find myself turning page after page of a thriller to find out what happens only to be left disappointed or underwhelmed. This book didn’t do that. Despite the fact that I worked out some things for myself, this did not dampen my enjoyment.
The thing I most respect about this book was that it did not rely on cheap tricks like an unreliable narrator, amnesia/memory loss, split timelines or my least favourite; deceptive or misleading storytelling techniques. It took a very pure approach to creating suspense.
Before diving into this book, I knew nothing about it. It was recommended on someone’s favourites and so I purchased it from the bookstore the following day. I didn’t even look at reviews for it. After I finished reading it, I checked it out on Goodreads only to find that it has fewer than 2000 ratings and an average star rating of 3.5 stars. 39% of reviewers rated it 4 stars, while 31% rated it 3 stars… which is fairly average.
Maybe my opinion is unpopular, but I thought this book was so close to perfection that it’s probably going in my top 10 books of the year. That being said, I recognise that some people will find this book completely insane, which it is.
In the best way possible.
